The Project Begins

I have a project in mind which I’m aiming to bring to fruition. It’s not fully thought out yet, it’s in it’s early stages and no doubt will be tweaked along the way. It’s around my art and doing something more concrete with it.

Basically I want to take my love of drawing humorous, colourful, cartoon-style illustrations and be more intentional with them. It is said, write what you know. Same can be advised for visual art. I’m a British guy, mid fifties, married, chunky and gay. Now that’s quite a list already for coming up with relatable art.

I am drawn (pun intended) to character art. That’s my starting point. To come up with a character (or a cast of characters), who would fit the stories, humour and scenarios I wish to create for an LGBTQ+ audience. My first thought is to come up with a morph style character. A blank canvas who can be whomever they wish. Side note, Bugs Bunny, though definitely not a morph, has that exact ability to be any gender/sexuality that he wishes.

I’m inspired by Moorf, Omino Bu, Jace, Buff Monster, Patch Whisky, Flo Dego and Cartoon Called Life to name a few. I want to put them all in a blender, add my own unique seasoning and spice and come up with something authentically mine.

To top it all off, I’m going to be more visible doing so. It begins with this post. I’m going to start documenting my progress here. This too may change in time. Who knows, I may start showing more on social media platforms, vlogging or a weekly newsletter. But let’s not run before I can walk. For now, for today, it’s one blog post. Tomorrow, I’ll do another and I’ll keep taking one step a day. It’ll all add up and before I know it, there’ll be a coffee table book full of my goofy, fun art.
